Know Before You Go!

Last week we looked at the Good To Go programme that has been introduced by VisitBritain to help restaurants and businesses indicate that they can open safely post-lockdown. They have also introduced some guidelines to help you, the traveller, prepare for a fun day out that keeps you safe. In short, Know Before You Go!

To begin with, if you have travelled abroad recently, be sure to check and abide by local quarantine restrictions.

So it’s time to plan your day out. Start by checking the attraction’s website and social media pages for up-to-date information. Some are limiting visitor numbers, others are doing timed entry, often with pre-booked reservations. Don’t risk getting there and finding you can’t get in. Don’t forget to check any other requirements, regarding masks, other safety precautions, etc.

How to travel responsibly in Britain

VisitBritain recommends the following steps when planning your day out.

  • Check the facilities. Are the public toilets open? What about car parks?
  • Pre-book if possible. As mentioned above, check online, and if needed, pre-book your time slot.
  • Get off the beaten track. A lot of popular beaches and attractions risk being crowded or unavailable so this is the perfect time to discover those quiet little spots you’ve always been wondering about. Look through some previous posts here on British Food and Travel if you need ideas.
  • Distancing! Observe the distancing requirements. This is currently 1 metre+ in England and 2 metres in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. But remain aware that this may change, depending on circumstances.
  • Cover up. Wear a face mask on public transport like buses, trains, taxis and minicabs.
  • Take a card. Make sure you have a bank card since some places are not accepting cash at the moment.
  • Take hand sanitiser with you – you don’t know where will be open for you to wash your hands.
  • Leave the car behind where possible and visit nearby attractions by walking or cycling.
