Woolly Winter Warmers: Our Best British Buys for January

wool

January, we’ve only just begun, and already the UK has been plunged into lockdown. However, we remain eternally hopeful that this will allow us to enjoy the spring and summer in all their glory. It does mean, of course, that supporting small British businesses, artists, and craftspeople is as or more important than ever. Each month, we will continue to feature some of our favourite Best British Buys. To kick 2021 off, our first post focuses on some of the gorgeous knits that can keep us warm this winter. Check out these beautiful woolly winter warmers.

Stellar Socks

Needle-mistress extraordinaire Ella (she uses five needles while I’m struggling with two!) offers custom-made socks that will “take your feet to new heights”. That sounds like a pretty good way to start off the year. Located in Eden Valley, near the Lake District, Ella sells handknit socks and wristwarmers. Order something to your specific taste, or check our her online shop at Stellar Socks.

Corrymoor Mohair

Knee-high Corrymoor walking socks.

The award-winning (and adorable) Angora goats of Devon’s Corrymoor Farm provide the wool for this selection of woolly winter warmers, including socks, scarves, and throws. The mohair wool they produce is non-itchy, smooth, moisture-wicking, and hardwearing. Your feet are in for a treat. They are also quick drying which makes them perfect for walkers. Corrymoor socks come in a range of styles and colours, meaning that you can find the ideal pair for work or play. You can find these and other mohair goodies at Corrymoor Mohair.

Iona Craft Shop

We love this Alpine Cardie from Iona Craft Shop.

The Scottish Isles may be out of reach for most of us at the moment, but the online Iona Craft Shop has dozens of items for sale, including plenty of woolly winter warmers. They offer beautiful FairIsle cardigans in a variety of vibrant colours and patterns, as well as blankets, throws, beanies, and felted slippers. They even have felted yellow wellies! If you are a keen knitter and prefer to make your own cardies, scarves, and gloves, the Iona Craft Shop also sells high-quality wool, spun from the various breeds that live and graze on the island. Check out the available items at the Iona Craft Shop.

The Crofthouse

A pair of woolly gloves will always keep your fingers warm.

More cosy knitwear options can be found at The Crofthouse, located in Aberdeenshire. All of their products are made from Scottish wool and cashmere. Their cashmere or lambswool gloves will keep your hands warm all day. You can probably never have too many pairs of gloves in case you lose one or both. Keep a pair in the car, in your handbag, and by the front door so you’ve always got a pair ready to go. While you’re shopping, you can also look at their wonderful new range of children’s sweaters and cardigans, made for kids aged three to eight. Order gloves, jumpers, and more from The Crofthouse.

The British Blanket Company

Just because you’re not planning to venture outside much doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy the comfort of British wool. The British Blanket Company has been selling blankets, rugs, and throws since 2015. In that relatively short time, the brother and sister team have won a number of awards. All of their items are woven from pure wool at mills around the country. Take your pick from the rich colours and styles on offer. Put them on your bed and the sofa, so you can wrap yourself up on cold winter nights. Look at your options from The British Blanket Company.
