The lockdowns of the last year have left many of us pent up at home and not getting enough exercise. Regular readers will know that I am a huge fan of walking, enjoying both its physical and its mental health benefits. I’ve also enjoyed many wonderful walks in Yorkshire, which is why I am pleased to see that 2021 is Welcome to Yorkshire’s year of Walkshire.
With its vast landscape of moors, vales, and coastline, Yorkshire has a huge variety of walks to offer. The Walkshire campaign aims to introduce people to the walking options throughout the region as a means of emphasising the benefits of being active outdoors.
Every day, the campaign’s Facebook page will feature a new walk. These will vary in length and location. To ensure variety, there will be walks in both urban and rural settings, along coast and through country. You’ll also find accessible routes, so that everyone can enjoy the outdoors regardless of physical ability. Examples of the walks posted just this week include a 7 mile stroll along the Driffield Canal, a climb to the top of Ingleborough, and a 2.5 mile walk around Barnsley’s Rabbit Ings Country Park. The routes are all also available at Yorkshire.com.
A few ideas…
Walking doesn’t have to be a long trek. It can be as simple as a stroll around the village with the dog.
Or you could head into the Dales for rolling hills, babbling streams, and the open country.
Alternatively, get your feet wet and explore the miles of Yorkshire coastline.
A quick reminder…
Given current pandemic conditions, safety is key. With that in mind, organisers remind you to follow government guidelines. Be mindful of spacing guidelines and any local restrictions that are in place. Don’t forget to dress appropriately too, especially if you are walking in winter. And, as always, be mindful of the countryside code.
