Our last post offered some reasons to visit Monmouthshire this autumn, but it’s not possible for everyone to drop everything and go to Wales. Still, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the crisp temps and golden leaves wherever you are in the country. Here are a few ideas for enjoying a great autumn day out in the British Isles.

Escape to an Island

No, we’re not suggesting you flee to the tropics, although the weather in the Scilly Isles can be much milder than elsewhere in the UK at this time of year. Getting away to one of the many islands around the British coast can be a great idea in autumn. The beaches are emptier and perfect for frosty morning strolls. The waters often take on a clearer glow in the autumn light. Plus their relative isolation can make them a great spot for stargazing on clear October evenings. The Isles of Scilly attract nature lovers at this time of year too, keen to spot the seals of see the migratory birds.

Or head north to Shetlands and embrace dark evenings, wooly jumpers, and dropping temperatures with a mug of hot chocolate. The Shetlands are also a fab spot for birdwatching in autumn, not to mention food festivals, cycling, and other activities. All the fun, with fewer tourists.

Visit a Historic House or Gardens

A historic house is perfect whatever the weather, but as the seasons change, the gardens take on a spectacular array of colours. And if it’s too cold, head inside to enjoy the views from a drawing room window. Buckinghamshire is highlighting its beautiful historic houses this fall. Each has fun activities going on. Minibeast hunts can keep the little ones interested at Benjamin Disraeli’s former home Hughenden. Or follow the scarecrow trail at Cliveden and take a rare peek around the exclusive on-site hotel. Gather conkers at Stowe, stroll the parklands at Canon’s Ashby, or visit the food fair in the grounds of Waddesdon.

Take a Camera

Wherever you go, don’t forget to grab your camera. Or, let’s face it, take your phone with you. Because you never know when the picture perfect landscape will appear in front of you, and the autumn light is often crystal clear. The folks at Visit Scotland have compiled a list of their best autumn photography spots so be sure to check it out. From lakes to coast, castles to villages, forests, and islands, they have you covered for some images that will make your friends jealous. We may even have to host a photography competition here on the site if you share your best with us. Even if you’re not near Scotland this autumn, you’re sure to find some picturesque seasonal landscapes.

Ride a Train

Don’t feel like walking or cycling? Take a train and watch the scenery pass by. We’ve written before about some of the wonderful steam train rides around the country, and many have special events on throughout the year. For example, Norfolk’s Bure Valley Railway has an offer allowing kids to travel for free during half term. Check out the following links for a few ideas:

Get Spooky

Halloween is approaching. What better way to spend autumn that to get a little spooky with a few ghost stories around the fire or a nighttime walk in the woods. Head to Suffolk’s Carlton Marshes on October 28 for a twilight event of stargazing, campfires, and searching for bats. Take a spooky river cruise along the Norfolk Broads on the Vintage Hauntsman. The spooky possibilities are endless (and if you are having an autumn event, feel free to post in the comments below with the links).
