Where To Go?
From the rolling hills of the Cotswolds to the dramatic coastline of Cornwall, the UK is filled with dog-friendly holiday spots.
Pet accessories shop Fur King recently carried out a survey to find the most pet-friendly destinations in the UK. Among the factors they considered were:
- Availability of dog parks
- Veterinarians
- Beaches
- Pet sitters
- Pet cafes
According to their findings, the following locations are the top 5 most pet friendly:
- Teignbridge, Devon.
- Rother, East Sussex.
- South Hams, Devon.
- Ribble Valley, Lancashire.
- East Lindsey, Lincolnshire.
Popular destinations for travelling with pets include:
- Lake District: Excellent for hiking and dog-welcoming inns.
- Cornwall: Numerous beaches, some with year-round dog access.
- Scottish Highlands: Vast landscapes and quiet trails.
- Yorkshire Dales: Ideal for countryside walks and charming villages.
- Pembrokeshire Coast: Stunning seascapes and dog-accessible trails.

Where To Stay?
Taking your pets on holiday with you is become more popular and so there are more accommodation options than ever before. Websites like PetsPyjamas or Canine Cottages can help you find accommodations that welcome dogs. Our affiliates Holiday Cottages UK and Rural Retreats welcome pets at many of their properties. Some places even offer dog beds, treats, and towels.
When booking, be sure to check policies regarding size, number of dogs allowed, and any extra fees.

What To Take?
Make sure to bring the following:
- Collar with ID tag (required by UK law in public)
- Food and water (plus bowls)
- Bed, blanket, and favorite toys
- Waste bags and cleaning supplies
- Lead, harness, and possibly a long-line for open areas
- Towels (for muddy adventures)
- Any medications or health records
How to Get Around?
Travelling with your dog can be as simple as putting her in the car or hopping on a train.
If you are going on a long drive, make sure Fido is properly restrained with a harness, crate etc. Also, plan for regular bathroom breaks along the route.
If travelling by train or bus, check for their individual policies regarding dogs.

What To Do?
This depends on you and your dog but the possibilities are endless.
If your dog enjoys long walks, head to a coastal path, a forest, or even an English Heritage property that may allow dogs into outdoor areas. As always, check local lead laws.
Your dog loves nothing more than a run along the beach? Perfect. Just check local restrictions about hours or seasons when dogs are allowed. And please clean up after him. It should go without saying, but no one wants to find an unwelcome surprise in the sand (or anywhere else for that matter).
Stop off at a county pub or beachside cafe. Many offer water bowls, treats, or even dog menus. Use an app like The Good Dog Guide to find them.
Tips To Keep Your Dog Happy
The following can help keep Doggo (and you) relaxed on holiday:
- Stick to your dog’s routine as much as possible.
- Monitor weather conditions and prepare for rain or heat.
- Keep your dog leashed in unfamiliar or livestock areas.
- Use a GPS tracker if walking off-lead.
- Know the location of the nearest vet or emergency animal clinic.
Travelling with your dog can be a fun bonding experience. With so many pet-friendly options and destinations, you don’t have to leave your furry friend behind. Just a bit of preparation ensures you both have a fun, safe, and unforgettable holiday. Happy travels!
